This project began as a faces and figures study, going back to basics as a photographer.
As I talked to my subjects, I asked a few questions to elicit those thoughtful, in-between moments that breathe authenticity into a portrait. Some of the answers they gave were amazing, and others were equally devastating. Soon, I was thinking of all the things people had said to me in my life that had changed my thinking – both good and bad.
I was also learning the cyanotype printing process as I began this series, and I thought the blue tones would complement the mood of many of the pieces.
I took portraits from previous sessions and added the words of things people have said to change a person. I experimented with objects and overlays. I am still learning about the best practices of cyanotype printing, just as I am still learning about processing things that have been said to me in a way that heals versus hurts.
